both in numbers participating in the parade and the number of spectators. it is estimated that last year approximately 500 people participated in the parade and there were around 2,500 spectators. this situation is of growing concern due to the logistics of safely accommodating such a large number of people around the war memorial which is situated in a confined area of the town. last year bad weather conditions contributed to these concerns. some young children participating in the parade in youth groups became distressed and were taken ill. a number of children were treated by st john ambulance for early onset hypothermia. these children were squeezed into a heavily congested area with their youth groups and were not with family members. due to these well-founded concerns regarding the safety and welfare of young children, bridgend town council has supported the decision initially taken by the rbl bridgend branch, to limit the age of children parading in non-military youth groups to children of school year seven and above at the remembrance parade on sunday 11th november. bridgend town council would like to clarify that young children are not banned from attending the event and are very welcome to attend to watch the parade with their families. furthermore, in an effort to manage the numbers of people participating in the parade, bridgend town council has agreed to limit the number of participants within each non-military youth group to 12 plus 2 reserves plus a minimum of 3 leaders. the children & family parade and service on saturday 10th november 2018 will begin at 10:20am and is tailored to provide an opportunity for primary school aged children to learn about the importance of remembrance. children will actively participate in the event by parading along wyndham street to the war memorial in dunraven place and will receive a remembrance service from reverend rachel wheeler. the event will also provide an opportunity for children to plant crosses at the war memorial in memory of the people from bridgend who lost their lives in world war i. formal invitations for the children & family remembrance parade and service will be sent to the leaders of youth groups, schools and the youth mayor. bridgend town council also wishes to invite the general public to support this event. to mark the centenary of the end of the first world war, bridgend town council has also invited the mayors of bridgend’s twin towns of villenave d’ornon, langenau and hechtel-eksel to attend the remembrance events. the mayor of langenau has accepted the council’s invitation and will lay a wreath at the war memorial on remembrance sunday. on sunday 11th november the remembrance parade will form up outside the civic offices in angel street, bridgend at 10.20am for a 10.35am step-off, and the service will take place at the war memorial at approximately 10.50am. arrangements have been made to read out the names of the people listed on the war memorial that died during world war i during the remembrance service. bridgend town council will be holding a number of remembrance events in bridgend town centre during november 2018. a remembrance exhibition to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the first world war will take place at carnegie house arts centre between 6th to 11th november and a remembrance cafe will be held at carnegie house arts centre on saturday 10th and sunday 11th november. 100% of the donations from the remembrance cafe will be given to the royal british legion. further details are available on the website: http://www.carnegiehouse.co.uk/events/remembrance-exhibition/ - ends - bridgend town council our responsibilities carnegie house arts and culture hub outdoor tasks around bridgend town centre administering the evergreen hall in angel street making charitable donations town twinning with towns in germany and france supporting and financing the annual cenotaph service and armed forces day administering five allotment sites (125 plots) maintaining all registered footpaths within the town council area supplying street furniture to support bcbc organising community skip schemes to assist in the removal of bulky refuse arranging summer floral displays and numerous small landscaping projects in the bridgend town controlling dog fouling with 25 bins throughout the area supporting children’s play schemes and equipment upgrades in play areas responsibility for providing all the christmas illuminations in bridgend town support for various annual street festivals giving 50% of the funding to bridgend’s shopmobility scheme providing funding for additional street cleansing and gum removal providing additional winter grit bins custody of the war memorial, randall memorial, ruhamah burial ground and other features in town commenting on any planning proposals within the town council area the town council is consulted by the county borough council regarding all matters within the town council area, in particular;
